Frank-Michael Erben comes from a Leipzig musician family and started playing the violin at the age of five. After completing his violin studies at the Leipzig Academy of Music „Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy“, at the age of twenty-one he was elected First Concertmaster of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra.
Since 1993 he has been the leader of the Gewandhaus Quartet. In addition to these tasks, F.M. Heirs as a soloist in Europe, North and South America, as well as the Middle East. More than 25 CD recordings and several DVD productions document this work and were u.a. awarded the German Record Prize. In 2007, the orchestra of the Bayreuth Festival appointed him first concertmaster. In recent years, the artist also increasingly appeared as a conductor in appearance.
After guest conductors at the Halle Academic Orchestra, the Gewandhaus Orchestra, the Herzliya Chamber Orchestra (Israel), the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, the Magdeburg Philharmonic, and the Leipzig Musical Comedy, the Leipzig Symphony Orchestra chose him as Principal Conductor in 2009. He held this position until 2014.
Frank-Michael Erben is elected honorary member of the Beethoven Verein Bonn and winner of the international Mendelssohn Prize of the City of Leipzig. He plays the violin of the Italian violin maker J.B. Guadagnini from 1755.
